Florida's Legacy Trail

5/3/2013

During our vacation last week we biked on Florida's Legacy Trail.  We had a wonderful time with our family in Siesta Key, Florida.  Located on the Gulf of Mexico near Sarasota, Siesta Key was voted America’s #1 beach in 2012 and I noticed during our visit that the ranking is still proudly posted throughout the area.  The white, flour-like sand is derived from quartz mineral deposits. It feels cool on your feet when you walk barefoot on the beach, even on scorching-hot days.

We visit with our kids and their friends around this time each year to get a jump start on summer weather.  Our daughter describes Siesta Key as her 'happy place' and she looks forward to the mid-Atlantic winter break...

The dot that can be seen out in the water is our son salt water fly fishing.  It was really hard for all of us to come back to reality at the end of our vacation week!

Aside from the spectacular beach, I'm extremely fond of Florida's parks and trails.  My husband and I rode to the Legacy Trail on rented beach cruiser bikes.  Unaccustomed to the area, I didn't pack food and water and none were available along the trail.  Although we had to cut our bike outing short and turn around at lunchtime, we thoroughly enjoyed biking on the rail trail away from motorized traffic and being surrounded by Florida 's rich flora and fauna.

Most of Florida’s transportation network is centered around the automobile. During a stop for water at a convenience store on our way back from the trail, I was amused when a young man who noticed the rental store name on our bikes asked, "did we ride all the way from Siesta Key?!"  We were only three miles from the bike rental shop at that point so I'm guessing he doesn't get out of his car much and is not very physically active.  That's certainly a shame because the nearby rail trail is a true gem.

We're already looking forward to next year's biking adventure when we return to the area.  I'll be sure to pack enough food and water to enjoy a 24 mile round trip from Sarasota to Venice, Florida on the Legacy Trail.

Be Well,
Mary
