It was time to leave neighborhood sounds of the Baltimore Grand Prix IndyCar race behind and find a more peaceful activity during the Labor Day weekend. My husband and I spent Saturday riding bikes on the Torrey C. Brown and Heritage Rail Trails. Biking Rail Trails is a great way to be active outdoors away from motorized traffic.
The round trip from Monkton, Maryland to Glen Rock, Pennsylvania is about 36 miles. A wonderful stopping point along the way is New Freedom, Pennsylvania. You'll find a homemade ice cream shop called "Bonkey's" inside a former movie theater and a relatively new "7 Sports Bar & Grille" just down the street with an excellent lunch menu and outdoor patio...

Both places are on Franklin Street, a few blocks east of the New Freedom rail trail crossing. You'll discover many interesting sights and sounds on this 41 mile trail that runs between Ashland, Maryland and York, Pennsylvania.

If you're new to Rail Trails, they are paths created on former rail corridors suitable for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. These gradual elevation trails often follow stream and river beds that naturally wind around hills and mountains. Many former train stations, whistle stops, and rail crossings have been preserved and restored. Once opposed by citizens who feared an increase in area crime, these not in my backyard (NIMBY) opponents have become some of rail trails' strongest advocates. Adjacent property values generally increase as more people seek improved recreation and active transportation opportunities.
